Maytag Appliance History

Maytag Company, one of America's best known appliance manufacturers, began in Newton, Iowa in 1893. Founded by Frederick Louis Maytag, his two brothers-in-law and George Parsons for a total of $2,400, the company began as a farm implement business. Originally known as Parsons Band Cutter and Self Feeder Company it was renamed Maytag Company when Fred L. Maytag took over sole control. Around 1900 Maytag expanded its farm implement line. In 1909 Fred L. Maytag bought an interest in the Mason Automobile Co., which became known as the Maytag-Mason Motor Co. Although their cars were known for exceptional hill-climbing ability, the automobile industry was extremely competitive and Fred Maytag sold his stock in the Maytag-Mason Motor Co. in 1910.

Maytag's first washing machine, the Pastime, was introduced in 1907. It had a wooden tub and a hand crank. Maytag offered an electric model in 1911. In 1915 the Multi-Motor gasoline-powered washer was built by Maytag. One model, the Maytag Fruit Jar Engine, used a Ball Mason canning jar as the fuel tank. Maytag developed washer attachments for churning butter and grinding meat. Maytag's Multi-Motor could even be used with a cream separator and as a light generator. Washing machine sales doubled and the laundry division of Maytag outperformed the farm implement division for the first time. From 1920 to 1926 Fred's son L. B. Maytag was company president. During this time Maytag's washing machine business becomes it focus and causes it to end the manufacture of farm implements.

Maytag went public and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1925. It survived the depression and was run by E. H. Maytag, another one of Fred's sons, from 1926 to 1940. In 1940 Fred's grandson, 29-year-old Fred Maytag II became company president. Maytag suspended manufacturing washing machines during World War II and produced parts for military aircraft including the B-29, B-17 and P-51 planes.

After the war Maytag again began producing washers and introduced its first automatic washer, the AMP in 1949. During the Korean War Maytag manufactured parts for tanks. In 1953 Maytag began production for clothes dryers. With the expansion of commercial laundries Maytag began producing commercial washers and dryers in 1958. When Fred Maytag II died in 1962 it was the first time since it was founded that a Maytag family member no longer ran the company.

Maytag began to expand by a series of acquisitions and mergers. Maytag bought Hardwick Stove Company and Jenn-Air Corp. in 1981. The acquisition of Magic Chef in 1986 nearly doubled the size of Maytag. Maytag acquired the Hoover Company in 1989. In 2001 Maytag acquired Amana.

In 2005 Maytag became the subject of a takeover battle and in late December stockholders agreed to sell to Whirlpool Corporation.

Through the years Maytag has marketed under the following brands: Admiral, Amana, Caloric, Crosley, Dynasty, Gaffers & Sattler, Glenwood, Hardwick, Holiday, Hoover, Jade, Jenn-Air, Litton, Magic Chef, Manu Master, Modern Maid, Norge, Sunray and Dixie-Narco.
